EDITORIAL

Well the month is new and we are half way through the year. Can you believe it?

The winter is been so mild that I think we have had some of our most magical days, better even that March/April.

Fisherhaven has had some tragedies this month and to anyone else who has suffered illness or accident get well soon.

The report back meeting was according to most who attended a very good meeting, as things go; it is the same old same old. Hopefully this year with three representatives on the Ward Committee we might even achieve something. The sleeping beauty awakens. The Municipality Deon van Vuuren in particular has really put some effort into making the play-ground at the Lagoon a more active place for our children and for that, we thank you. What we need next is a really pretty entrance down China Marais and that horrible mud to disappear.

Some people have no shame or conscience. Be proud of our place in the sun don’t use or abuse it. Make it possible for each and every one of us to enjoy it even if you don’t. We don’t need people like that here and the sooner they learn to respect other people and their property the sooner they will be respected.

Enough moaning, lets get on to something much more cheerful. The Fisherhaven Ladies came together at the Piccaninny in response to Pat Masterson’s request to have a Cup for Cancer and you can all feel very proud of yourselves the mighty sum of nearly R2 000 was raised. Thank you to Johann & Santa at the Piccaninny and a big thank you to Pat for organising the event. There were some delicious eats and more than enough for every one. To all the Hostess thank you.

The Christmas Fete is to take place on the 17th December and we are looking for stallholders, you can book your stall now but we will need a deposit of the full fee of R50 to secure your place. We also desperately require volunteers as there are not enough of us to man all the kiddies events, poor Mike at the Easter Festival was juggling three money bags and did very well in spite of that. So come on take part in the Fisherhaven’s on-going 50th celebrations. Please pass the word to family, friends and acquaintances. You can contact Pat on 315 1600 or myself on 315 1605 for any further information.

Another request is for news items and adverts for the Chit Chat. People do read this little publication and your name will be known. You can feed the Ratepayers box at the Café.

HANDY HINTS

Liquorice reduces stress, although those of us with high blood pressure should not have more than 5 pieces daily.

Honey is a great soother for that minor burn. Just drizzle it on and cover with a bandage.

Cinnamon scented air freshener in your car will help to keep you alert and less fatigued than no scent at all.

Your jersey top shows the hanger bumps. Your hairdryer will fix it in a jiffy. Put the dryer on high and move it along the bump, not on it but at it.

7 REASONS TO BE GLAD SUMMER IS OVER.

1)         The only dimples you will show are the ones on your cheeks

2)         Ice-cream is less tempting.

3)         You can sit on your lawn furniture without sticking to it.

4)         The barometer reading won’t dictate your hairstyle.

5)         You can hit the snooze button a few more times now that shaving every day is not necessary.

6)         Those three words Moms love to hear back to school on the 17th July.

7)         You won’t have to listen to your husband brag about how he is king of the braai.

E-mail joke

A little girl picked up an item from the ground and started to put it in her mouth. Her Mom told her to put it down because it was dirty and had germs.

The little girl asked, “How do you know this?”

Mom answered, “Its on the Mommy test – you have to know these things or they don’t let you be a mommy.”

The little girl “So if the fail you have to be a Daddy?”

LOOK OUT

There is a couple who are digging up our plants. Watch out for them. I don’t think they are permanent resident’s only weekenders. Don’t they realise that any plants dug up or pulled out will not grow and that they are killing our fynbos.

--------------------------------------------------

THANKS

Dave and Sue newcomers to Fisherhaven were involved in an accident a few weeks back and are most grateful for the assistance and help offered by the Fisherhaven community. Ingrid God bless her has loaned Sue a car as their one was written off. Dave is in a wheelchair with a broken leg, hip and ankle. Poor Sue is covered in bruises from head to toe so any help will be gratefully accepted. To all of you who have been to visit thank you, it just goes to show what a close community we are and that in time of need we stand together.

FROM THE CHAIR

This month seems to have been a little bit of a complaining month, with items such as the state of the verges and driveways along China Marais, after the laying of the sewerage pipe, the logging business in China Marais etc. So I made enquires and have ascertained that the verges and driveways should have been returned to their original state by the contractor and the Municipality is currently negotiating the speedy (we hope) conclusion to this problem.

My neighbour telephoned me with regard to the logging business he was apparently running from his residential property and after a not too heated and reasonable discussion, he informed me that he would no longer use chain saws to cut the tree trunks and that he will not in the future, park his lorry on his neighbour’s plot. In fact, he informs me that he has found an alternative place to park this vehicle, which is completely outside Fisherhaven. I hope that all those who complained about this operation are satisfied that the owner has made reasonable compromises and that the whole matter did not degenerate into a full-scale “war” with legals etc. My thanks to my neighbour for being reasonable.

Elsewhere in this issue, there is a letter from Colin Farrow – the main points of which I would answer thus:-

Thank you for your comments Colin, much of which I agree wholeheartedly with. Your 5-year plan has much to commend it, but it does have a few weaknesses, which would have to be addressed.

A 5-year plan pre-supposes that funds will be available for a specific major item on an on-going annual basis, and historically, believe me such a scheme has never been available to Fisherhaven, which is not to say that that could not change.

My personal opinion of our elected councillor is that as a person he seems to be good-natured, reasonable and approachable. However, when it comes to budget time and money allocation within Ward 8, I think Mr Gelderbloem is of the opinion that Ward 8 starts and ends with Hawston. It is not difficult to see why – he perceives his main voting base is within Hawston. (What a pity ANC voters who happen to live in Fisherhaven are ignored).

I agree totally with Colin – Ward 8 should be just that – Hawston AND Fisherhaven and the sooner councillor Gelderbloem recognises that fact the sooner we can ALL pull together. The big question is – how do we change his mindset in order that funds will be fairly allocated to those areas in most need of them and ignore their geographical location within Ward 8?

Here is food for thought – in the draft capital budget 2006/2007 the total funds allocated to Ward 8 are R8 960 000. Of that total R8 460 000 will be spent in Hawston and just R500 000 will be spent in Fisherhaven. Or expressed another way – Fisherhaven will receive just 5.91% of the total.

Would you say we are getting a fair allocation of the budget? I think you all know what I think of our share.

Keep ‘em peeled, be safe not sorry.
Mike Masterson

A PAGE FROM COUNTRY LIFE

The Moon is a Lion

This ancient African story explains the waxing and waning of the moon and its effect on the night sky.

Once upon a time, the stars were people; the big ones were adults and the small ones were children. As for the moon, he was a hungry lion who simply loved to eat people, especially children.

The more children he ate, the bigger and bolder he got until there were precious few children (smaller stars) left in the night sky. At this point, the lion started eating the adults. Realising there was no end to the lion’s hunger – he was now huge and round – the adults ran away and they too disappeared from the night sky (full moon).

The lion looked around and couldn’t find any more people to eat. Without food he started getting thinner and thinner until there was hardly anything left of him at all (new moon). Fortunately, just as he was about to expire, he looked around and, what do you know, the children and adults had all returned.

How’s that for a story now you know why the stars disappear when the moon is full.

SPOTLIGHT

In the spotlight, this month is Robin Clacher – The man responsible for the electrical sector on the FRA committee.

Robin was born in Cape Town, his mother having come from England after meeting her husband who was in the Royal Navy on the Isle of Wight during the war. He was educated at Bergvliet Primary and matriculated from Plumstead High, where he played 1st team rugby. After completing his electrical apprenticeship at Cape & Transvaal Printers, he spent a year in England and Europe, visiting relations and it was, there he met his wife Pat, who was a nursing sister. They came to settle in Cape Town in 1975 and Robin worked for Escom at Salt River Power Station.

He took early retirement when the Power Station was de-commissioned and demolished in 1994. They bought a farm in the Napier area and ran it as a Guest Farm for ten years. They then retired “again” in 2003 to Fisherhaven.

They have two married children, a son living in Cape Town and a daughter in Mauritius who works as a Doctor with her husband who is a pilot for Air Mauritius and their two children.

So now, we know our electric problems will be well handled by Robin who is more than qualified for the job.

LETTER FROM A CONCERNED READER and MEMBER OF THE WARD COMMITTEE

I, Colin Farrow am very concerned that the Ratepayers of Fisherhaven are divided in their thinking when it comes to matters of budgets, and how and where these funds should be used, if we secure any at all. Unless we unify our efforts we will find that, the Municipality will be of the opinion that we cannot be of one mind as to the future improvements that we would like to see in our village. Let us try to have a 5-year plan of action, and then split it into a yearly wish. A fresh 5-year plan of action to be drawn up before the current plan expires. This plan should be decided in consultation with our three elected Ward Committee Members and then only one wish list submitted for consideration to the Municipality. All previous submissions should be withdrawn and only the new wish list considered.

We appear to expend so much energy and effort on the negative issues and none on the positive. Lets all try and bridge the chasm that exist between the two villages of Hawston and Fisherhaven, which is the Ward overseen by the elected Councillor Jan Gelderbloem. He will be in office for the next 5 years and should be invited to our meetings so that he can hear what the Ratepayers of Fisherhaven would like to happen in our village. We will achieve more by working together than pulling in opposite directions. Mike Chairperson of the FRA replies in his scribblings.
